Just steps from the Champs-Élysées, this barber shop for the modern dandy is full of surprises. The modish industrial design and old-fashioned chairs may not cause you to blink twice, but step inside and a whole different world will reveal itself. For Gentlemen 1919 is not simply a coiffeur it is also a speakeasy bar and smoking club where one can enjoy a cocktail (or one of 80 whiskies), a fine cigar and a planche of cheese and charcuterie after having your beard expertly trimmed (open Sat-Tues, 9am until 2am).

Suitably tucked away in the historic Marais, Paris's only master barber plies his trade in a building dating from the late 19th century. Against a backdrop of neatly displayed old hairdressing equipment, Alain offers personalised cuts and meticulous trims and also sells old-fashioned tools of the trade with some free advice thrown in. They don't make 'em like this anymore.
