Paris' American Coffee Revolution: A Guide

American-style coffee shops offering plenty of top-notch coffee and slick interiors are overtaking typical Parisian cafés. Here are some of the locals’ favourites.

Started by a couple of cousins, this second branch of Dose is proving to be just as successful as the first thanks to its laid back vibe and simple home-made food. The duo fitted out the shop themselves and there are photos and perfumes from local collective Lola James Harper around the space. However, the real star is the coffee which hails from a champion roaster in Brittany and which you won't find in many other places. Three healthy lunch options are offered every day as well as a selection of freshly blended juices. And don't miss brunch on Sundays!

Holiday Café

It may be a trek from the centre of Paris but this might be your last chance to see a lesser known corner of Paris before the wave of gentrification swallows it up. Holiday Café Opened by the relaunched American travel publication Holiday Magazine, there is a simple Parisian snacking menu which clients can enjoy while sipping great coffee served by waiting staff in designer uniforms.

Café Oberkampf

Opened in summer 2015, Café Oberkampf offers a range of coffee from French roasters such as KB and Mokxa. Owner Guy selects the blends according to his own taste and judging by the crowds he's got it spot on! Just like the decor, the menu has a Mediterranean feel and the shakshouka has made quite a name for itself. The banana bread and grilled cheese are also worth the trip.

The Hardware Société

The Parisian outpost of this Melbourne institution sits at the foot of the Sacré Cœur. The Hardware Société young staff are serious about their coffee and serve blends imported from their Aussie roaster, Padre (try the Daddy's Girl blend). Probably the most cosmopolitan address in the area, the mouthwatering food menu features all-day breakfast, seafood dishes, irresistible desserts and more.

Just like these other cafés, you probably won't hear much French here either but don't let that stop you enjoying a cup of Joe served from owner Beebo's Kees Van der Westen espresso machine. He also serves home-made organic cakes and pastries for Radiodays as well as fresh juices which you can savour while flicking through his comic collection or choosing which vinyl to stick on the record player.
