Paris's best spots at sunset

The most fashionable venues with the best sunset views over the French capital give you the true spirit of summer.

Before heading out for a late night stroll by the river Seine, stop by any one of these luxurious restaurants and bars in Paris. These quintessential venues capture the true essence of the city of lights through breathtaking views.

Tour Montparnasse

A black slab that slices across the low-rise Paris skyline, the 56th floor of the rather unattractive Montparnasse Tower isn’t the most glamorous spot for sunset drinks but it’s certainly the best, if not the only place where visitors can have unobstructed 360° views of the whole capital. Champagne is served out of the pocket-sized bar while a jazz band adds a little ambience.

Le Georges

Designed by architects Jakob + MacFarlane (also behind Les Docks – Cité de la Mode) the glass-clad industrial chic rooftop restaurant sits on the sixth floor of the Centre Pompidou contemporary art museum. A popular hang-out that’s part of restaurateur Thierry Costes’ empire, Le Georges is one of few venues that boast such show-stopping views of the sun setting behind the quintessentially Parisian UNESCO-listed zinc rooftops sprinkled with terracotta chimneys.

Les Ombres

The rooftop restaurant nestles in the luxuriant gardens of the Quai Branly museum by the Seine. Designed by Jean Nouvel, it offers panoramic views of Paris that span from the Palais Chaillot to the Sacré Coeur, punctuated by the Eiffel Tower. The upmarket but laid-back spot is a well-kept secret among locals; it serves traditional French brasserie food with a world twist.

Les Jardins du Pont Neuf

A floating terrace on the River Seine, the Jardins du Pont Neuf is a below-the-radar spot for enjoying sunset drinks and ‘chic picnic’ finger food. Popular with a smart fashion in-crowd, Les Jardins is located right in the heart of Paris on the Ile de la Cité just steps away from Notre Dame. The muted retro-exotic décor allows for the quintessentially Parisian surroundings to take centre-stage, while the upbeat sounds keep things appropriately lively.

Café Marly

Set in prime location within the Louvre palace grounds, patrons can sit at one of the tables that run along the arched balcony to watch the daylight peter out behind architect I.M. Pei’s glass pyramid while sipping on a glass of champagne or tucking into a steak tartare. While this might be one of the city’s most exclusive spots, note that the fare remains a casual affair.

Le Perchoir Marais

The bar that got the ball rolling when it comes to optimising Paris rooftops, Le Perchoir first opened in the under-the-radar 20th district before setting up three more outposts. Located on the BHV department store rooftop, it’s here that the beautiful people of Paris like to mingle glass of rosé in hand while gazing out at the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. Open Thursday to Saturday from 8.15pm until 2.00am.
