Roger Dubuis: Credo of Exclusivity Featured

We speak to Roger Dubuis' Creative Director Alvaro Maggini who reveals his approach to haute horlogerie design.

by 06 March 2015

Known for its unique double flying tourbillon movement, Roger Dubuis – a young brand in a centuries-old watchmaking industry – takes another daring step this year with the new Astral Skeleton collection. Not only is the Excalibur Spider powered by a new automatic skeleton movement, RD820SQ, it also features a rubber bezel set with diamonds. In an exclusive interview we go deep into the world of the Genevan watchmaker.

“My biggest challenge is to find a good idea, and produce a wow effect,” says Maggini as we look at the booth, designed like a spatial spiderweb. The stand, with its smooth black skeletal structures against a striking red background, recalls a movie or fashion shoot set. Indeed, Maggini draws inspirations from many different sources: “Everything I see around me inspires me. What I see, smell, hear, touch… I am like a sponge,” as he points out.

Dressed in a mix of designer and artisanal pieces, Maggini explains that he finds inspiration every day, from speaking to the international press at SIHH, to discovering Belstaff’s capsule collection that blends fashion with the motorcyclists’s style... Jotting down ideas on large sheets of papers, he adds or fine-tunes them again and again. The result of his work is often quite surprising.

“People think it is easy to churn out ideas and do the same thing every year, but it's not. The watch world is quite a traditional one. I respect the group, the brand and the product, so I try to strike a balance with my own creativity.” This year’s novelties combine the classic and the new, inside and out. The new in-house calibre spotlights a star-shaped design with ‘Poinçon de Genève’ finishings. In an innovative touch that combines a flexible material with stunning gemstones, the rubber bezel is set with brilliant-cut diamonds.

Roger Dubuis also explores its feminine side with the limited edition Excalibur Creative Skeleton Brocéliande. The 28 pieces stand out with ivy ornaments that twist around the movement, showcasing craftsmanship and depth. The bezel and flange are set with brilliant-cut diamonds and a rose-cut diamond on the crown adds a glamorous touch.

Speaking of glamour, it is without doubt one of Roger Dubuis’ characteristics, which is best experienced in its boutiques. “Coming to our store is a religious experience, because you identify with our credo of exclusivity. Our boutique exclusives reflect our commitment to get closer to the customer and offer them something truly special.”
