Round the Dial Featured

New collections of mens luxury watches and ladies luxury watches in store this year
by 01 May 2011

Our coverage of this year’s Salon International de Haute Horlogerie previews the new watches that you will find in boutiques later this year. Most watch manufacturers participating in SIHH are over a century old, while some are trailblazers in the world of horological wonders. Mind-boggling complications and beautiful jewellery watches prove just how fascinating the measurement of time can be. Both collectors and watch enthusiasts will find something interesting in this feature.

The world is not enough. Then, how about having 24 cities right on your wrist? Jetsetters and business travellers need to know the local time around the world. So Montblanc has come up with the Star World-time GMT Automatic watch, which features a second time-zone in the centre of the dial, and an indication of 24 cities worldwide. This user-friendly timepiece houses the calibre MB 4810/405, which lets you adjust the different settings with the crown.

When the crown is in its neutral (unscrewed) position, turning it clockwise manually winds the automatic movement and turning it counter-clockwise resets the outer ring which indicates the worlds 24 time zones. When the crown has been withdrawn to its first extracted position, turning it clockwise resets the date and turning it counter-clockwise triggers the GMT hand (with the red tip) to advance in hourly increments. Finally, when the crown has been further withdrawn to its second extracted position, turning it clockwise adjusts the 12-hour and the minute-hand in the usual manner.

The new Montblanc Star World-Time GMT Automatic is available in two versions. One has a black guilloche dial, silver Arabic numerals, rhodium-plated hands and a black alligator leather strap. The other has a silver guilloche diale with black numerals, blued hands and stainless steel bracelet.

Traditionally, watchmakers use the tourbillon to compensate for inaccuracies caused by gravity. The tourbillon carriage revolves on its own axis in one minute, passing through all possible centres of gravity. The tourbillon’s escapement averages out the errors, thus cancelling out any variations in rate that occur in the vertical positions. Cartier, after five years of research and development, has come up with an ingenious solution.

In the 9800 MC Astrorégulateur movement, the escapement, the oscillator and the pendular seconds have been positioned on the rotor to maintain the centre of gravity in a single position. By adjusting the oscillator in this one position, the master watchmaker ensures that the platform of the Astrorégulateur movement avoids the disturbing effect of gravity on timekeeping in all vertical positions.

This movement – hand-finished, individually numbered, with the Cotes de GeneÌ€ve decoration – powers the 50-piece limited edition watch. Limited-edition series of 50 individually numbered timepieces worldwide.

The French maison’s new collection, “Les Voyages Extraordinaires,” is a tribute to Jules Verne’s stories – from the “Five Weeks in a Balloon” and the limited edition “Les 4 Voyages” timepieces, to the African and polar landscapes of the “Lady Arpels” and the “Makis” high jewellery watch.

Louis de Meckenheim, Marketing Watch Manager, said, "All our sources of inspiration are universal values: nature, love, femininity, grace, the arts and craft. This year we present a wide variety of landscape: Africa, the North Pole… Love is also our universal value. Last year, we presented the "Le Pont des Amoureux" watch that depicted a scene between lovers. This year, our theme is maternal love, inspired by Jules Verne's "Les Voyages Extraordinaires.

"We are 100% emotion, and both our design and movement aim to generate genuine feelings. In a Van Cleef & Arpels watch, diverse textures, different perspective, and exclusive materials all lead to a moment of awe. A lot of French children grow up reading Jules Verne’s stories. This collection conjures up emotions of our inner child."
