The second edition of the biggest yacht gathering in the Middle East – the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS) – is set for February 2010. The three-day event promises to make an even more extravagant spectacle than the inaugural edition which took place in March 2009, to resounding international acclaim. From February 25-27, Abu Dhabi will play host to some of the biggest names in the global yachting industry and the most luxurious super- and mega-yachts plying the seas, making it one of the most exclusive and eagerly-awaited events on the international yachting – and the region’s social – calendar. Here are 10 reasons why the 2nd Abu Dhabi Yacht Show is an event that’s not to be missed!
Big Toys for Big Boys
More than 25 of the world’s most outstanding and spectacular yachts, ranging in size from 30 to over 100 metres, will at the show. From Silver Zwei, the world’s longest all-aluminum yacht at 73 metres, to the slick 48 metre Walter Franchini-designed Ellix Too; the elegant Trident – a 65 metre testament to the marriage of form and function – to the impressive beach house inspired 58 metre M/Y Outback, any Middle Eastern multi-millionaire looking for his newest toy can find it at ADYS.
Trends and Technology
With a powerful exhibitor line-up of industry heavyweights from the USA, Europe, Scandinavia and the Middle East already contracted, ADYS will be one of the most exciting platforms for yachting and marine businesses and enthusiasts to scout out the latest products, trends, equipment and technology. It’s the year’s biggest opportunity for potential yacht owners to meet the designers, builders and brokers, as well as yachting accessory suppliers,. It’s also where the Middle East’s nascent manufacturing base can form partnerships with the best in the business, to bring the most innovative products and technology to the region.
Home to the spectacular Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix circuit, Yas Island has been catapulted onto the international motorsport scene in recent months and its world-class marina facilities are playing a major role in its growing popularity. Yas Marina’s dedicated superyacht dock, as well as its sporting and leisure marine facilities, make it an unparalleled setting for the second edition of ADYS. This is where the world’s leading yachting companies and luxury lifestyle brands will parade their latest products against the backdrop of the stunning vessels and around the show’s first-class restaurant and lounge facilities.
Gulf Superyacht Forum
Key regional industry players will mix and mingle, swapping industry knowledge and marketplace insights at the Gulf Superyacht Forum. This is a two-day exclusive and interactive meeting of superyacht business leaders who seek to expand their understanding of the Gulf region - specifically its clients, culture and the developing maritime infrastructure. As a networking platform for potential regional broking, the Forum’s value is unsurpassed and attendees can expect to leave with unrivalled insight into the way the Gulf’s superyacht business works.
Made in the UAE
Locally based shipyards such as Abu Dhabi MAR, Gulf Craft and ART Marine are sailing ahead of the competition with a growing number of regionally-built yachts. With a rich naval history and a growing maritime industry, the UAE is fast developing into the yachting industry’s regional hub and a base for several of the largest ship building yards. For example, Abu Dhabi MAR Shipyard – which also owns two other major superyacht builders in Europe - occupies a new state-of-the art facility in Abu Dhabi’s Port Zayed area; which, when complete, will cover nearly 200,000 square metres.
Charity Gala Dinner
The social highlight of the yachting extravaganza is the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show Gala Dinner on Wednesday, 24 February, which will be an evening of opulent style and eloquent grandeur. It is also an excellent opportunity to socialise with the industry’s biggest achievers, innovators and figureheads, and enjoy world-class cuisine and entertainment. The black-tie/national dress gala dinner will feature a number of activities that will guarantee a memorable evening, with all event proceeds going to charity.
Head down to the Quayside, and linger by the moored superyachts at the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show Cocktail Receptions on the evenings of both Thursday 25th and Friday 26th February. Expect sundowners by the water’s edge, great company and a spectacular ambience, where invited guests can relax and network, sealing those all-important deals over a friendly drink.
Abu Dhabi – A Capital City
With more than 200 natural islands, almost year-round sunshine, fabulous beaches, five-star hotels, award-winning restaurants, and cultural attractions that will include the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi museums in coming years, as well as international sporting events like the PGA European Tour-backed Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the UAE capital offers a host of world-class corporate and leisure amenities for international visitors. The drive to attract tourists is part of a long-term strategy headed up by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) – the ADYS headline sponsor– to invest oil revenues in the emirate’s future. Today’s modern, high-rise buildings and the innovative blueprints for future projects are testament to the capital’s investment prowess.
A myriad of marinas are currently on drawing boards or under construction and will combine to create a marine leisure environment on a par with the best in the Mediterranean. Destinations within destinations, these marinas will be lively, compelling environments where residents and visitors can mingle in boardwalk cafés and restaurants, where chandlery shops will service crew needs, where hotel guests can soak up the atmosphere and magnificent views of the sparking Gulf waters, and where sunsets will be marvelled at and appreciated in time-honoured style. Head to Abu Dhabi to enjoy the newest yachting hotspot in its heady first years.
Retail and Leisure Therapy
The luxurious off-shore attractions may take up most of your time during the weekend event, but don’t forget to head to dry land to enjoy some of the Abu Dhabi’s diverse activities. Shop to your heart’s content in traditional markets and enjoy a unique cultural experience while you bargain for treasured trinkets, or head to the impressive modern malls to find your favourite designer brands. If you want to be pampered, the city’s luxurious spas offer a range of therapies and treatments in opulent surroundings, or relax by practicing your putting at the capital’s several world-class golfing greens.
