Gate Village, hidden within the vast sprawl of Dubai International Financial Centre provides the perfect antidote to mall-fatigue. Here you won’t find any of the usual mega-brands, but the edgier, more fashion-forward labels coveted by the style mavens of New York and London.
Designers like Issey Miyaki, Jil Sander and Maison Martin Margiela all occupy beautiful, modernist retail spaces that house their full collections. Add to this the genius of Dries Van Noten, Marni and Vivienne Westwood and you can fill an entire afternoon browsing for that unique standout piece.
Nina Ricci, who partnered with Villa Moda to establish a presence in the Middle East, modelled their new boutique in line with the aesthetic of the House's Creative Director Olivier Theyskens. Resembling a Parisian home, the eggshell walls are trimmed in antique gold to beautifully showcase the very feminine collections of daywear, cocktail dresses and evening gowns.
One of the most whimsical boutiques however belongs to Tsumori Chisato. Unlike any of its other stores around the world, it was created to reflect the urban landscape of Dubai. Divided into different sections, it urges you to linger longer in the store to discover the designer's bold and uniquely imaginative collection.
Flanked by contemporary art galleries, Villa Moda’s Dubai store is itself a mecca to individual style. Their decadently designed multi-brand, two-storied ‘palace’ stocks diverse eveningwear, accessories and one-off jewellery pieces. First launched in Kuwait in 1992, the cosmopolitan store with a "Gulf twist" finds many new fans in the leagues of wealthy business travellers that unwittingly find themselves at their doors.
Finally, once you’ve exhausted your platinum credit card, treat yourself to a pastry at patisserie Florian, or retreat to Zuma just a few steps away, for a light lunch and cocktails. Perfect.
