Fit for the Sun

Between the siesta and the festa.

by Jessica Bowler 15 July 2018

As the warm weather approaches in Spain, the beaches all along the coastline start filling up with visitors and locals alike, eager to show off their toned physiques – particularly in Marbella. Under the golden rays of the Mediterranean sun, visitors near and far head to the jewel of the Costa del Sol to luxuriate in the sublime sun during the summer months.

If you’re looking to join the pack of bronzed sun worshippers in top shape, make the most of the Mediterranean and try some new routines solo or in a group. More adventurous souls can incorporate the waves into the workout, adding fun to the heat factor. No matter what activity you choose, you’re bound to enjoy the magic of Marbella’s privileged setting.

In the ‘Zen’ Zone

For those looking to restore both body and mind, there are plenty of very good yoga options in Marbella. One of the top spots is Radiant Yoga Marbella, where you can choose from yoga sessions led by expert teachers, including hot yoga, Vinyasa flow, aerial yoga, and a specific body sculpting class. Add to that a beautiful view of the La Concha Mountain as you stretch and soothe and strengthen.

If you’d rather experience something more unusual, book a stand-up paddle yoga session. Both PaddleSurf Marbella and NaluSur Adventure Tours offer yoga classes atop a paddleboard, not far off the seashore. You’ll move through the waves to a calm area of sea and practice your poses. The added balancing act is an excellent challenge for deep toning and tightening.

Golf Capital

Marbella is well-known for its vast and perfectly-groomed golf courses. Enjoy a combination of mind and body exercise as you make your way around some of the world’s most coveted green grounds. Perhaps the best-known is the Real Golf Club de las Brisas, dotted with palm trees and plenty of water features that remind you the sea is never too far. Members and their guests can enjoy putting their way around a world-class course. The on-site restaurant is open to the public, and features a lovely menu of Spanish classics.

Another highlight of the ‘Golf Valley’, as the area is named, is the Marbella Golf and Country Club. Designed by famed golfer Robert Trent Jones, this course may not be the longest – it measures 6,411 yards in total – but it has quite a few surprises and challenges in store. We suggest you have a try, and afterwards, take a quick drive down to the beach, or have a meal at the clubhouse.

Boot Camp

If you prefer a more intense and fast-paced sports activity, there are plenty of boot camp-style exercise classes on offer, many of which take place on the sands of Marbella’s many beaches, adding extra ‘oomph’ to the fitness challenge. The Estrella de Mar Beach Club boasts a fitness room right in front of the beach with a variety of classes including a boot camp, power toning class, aqua-pilates, and much more. You can also hire a personal trainer to better attend to your personal fitness goals.

Marbella Fitness Camp provides between five and six exercise sessions per day, with exercises including CrossFit, boxing, Zumba and more. You can also participate in beach workouts to make the most of the ideal location. The team of experts will ensure you get a full body workout during the boot camp session. Sessions begin in June 2018.

Ride a Wave, or Submerge

A year-round favourite on the Costa del Sol when it comes to exercise is to head to the waters of the Mediterranean. There are activities that range from seaside classics such as windsurfing and kayaking, to laid-back fishing and yachting trips. You can even book a snorkelling session and explore the wonders that inhabit the Mediterranean Sea. At Windsurf Marbella you can join windsurfing, kayaking, wakeboarding, and paddle surfing classes.

On the beachfront in Marbella you’ll find a generous presence of rental agencies that have all the equipment ready to go – all you have to do is choose.
