In 1968, embodying the innovative spirit of the era, Van Cleef & Arpels created the first Alhambra long necklace, inspired by the shape of the 4-leaf clover, made up of 20 motifs in creased gold and delicately edged with golden beads, complemented with everyday jewellery pieces featuring bold combinations of materials.
Whether these fine pieces were lucky charms, or simply resonated with the positive vibe of the Age of Aquarius and of the women who wore them – such as Grace Kelly, Romy Schneider and le temps de l’amour’s Françoise Hardy – the Alhambra collection has been a true icon of luck ever since its creation.
Last year the Alhambra turned 50 and Van Cleef & Arpels celebrated in style. The maison’s Mains d’Or craft Vintage Alhambra long necklaces and bracelets in pink gold with grey mother-of-pearl and diamonds, or onyx and diamonds with white gold. A limited edition showcases lapis lazuli and diamonds on the one hand, and rock crystal on the other.
Jacques Arpels once said: “To be lucky, you have to believe in luck”. The 4-leaf clover, which he used to collect from his garden and give to his staff, still inspires the world today.
Yet there are more collections to take into consideration when thinking about the perfect Valentine's present to give her, especially the Frivole collection, that with its three delicate flowers, creates an impression of delicacy and lightness ideal for sophisticated women.
