Style Guide: Dressing for 2015

Don't leave your style behind in 2014 but instead invest in a fresh and effortless new you whether at the office, on the school run or mile high...

Your ball gown might not have turned into rags as the clock chimed midnight on 2014, but the start of a new year usually signals the end of a style fuelled few weeks and the return of a more sensible every day wardrobe - less superfluous sequins, more tactical tailoring.

But just because we're once again back in the boardroom, keeping up appearances on the school run or jet setting around the globe, it doesn't mean our style can be abandoned back on last year's dance-floor. 2015 is all about effortless elegance.

Whatever your day-to-day duties demand, they need to be met with a style soaked graceful ease. But this isn't always as simple as it may sound, especially when it comes to dressing for not just one occasion, but transitioning from one to another with seamless style. Nailing your ensemble from boardroom to boarding lounge, not to mention onto the hotel lobby lounge with a cocktail in one hand and hot date in the other, is quite the worthy wardrobe mission.

The key to tackling such style encounters is to invest in a clever capsule wardrobe made up of good quality separates and with a multitude of accessories on hand to season and shake up every day staples...

The corporate cool closet
Goodbye LBD, hello suit needn't mean goodbye style hello business bore. Go for classics but with a twist. Stella McCartney gets it just right when it comes to this chic but cool tailoring. A few pairs of well-tailored trousers (wide legged and high waisted and sleek cigarette pants), a crisp white fitted shirt, some floral and print silky blouses, a pencil and midi skirt (cinched waist, full skirt and under the knee in suede or leather) and a mannish blazer make a good basic mix and match staple set.

Utilitarian chic is a big trend for SS 15 and the perfect style to inject into your office ensemble. Think impeccable tailoring, sharp shirts, structured silhouettes and plenty of pocket detailing. For instant style credentials and injecting a bit of you into the mix, finish your look with a statement necklace, earrings or scarf. And don't let your shoes let the side down. A chunky block heel will excel you into the spring fashion arena and is ideal for combining office comfort and cool.

The school-run revamp
Mummy may be exhausted after what seems like never-ending school holidays and Christmas catering for the masses, but that is no excuse to let the frump reign. Get back into those skinny jeans and fine knit sweaters, keep out the chill with chic layers and invest in a statement winter coat and pair of flat leather knee high boots (if you haven't already). They will cover up a multitude of sins if time gets the better of you before 9am. And be armed with coloured and print scarves, which you can simply throw over the more mundane of off duty casuals to perk up your look.

Jet setting separates
Whether a business trip with a social agenda or a weekend away to visit friends or your new man, getting the balance right between dressed up and dressed down and corporate and cool is crucial. Pack too much and you won't know where to start and go too minimal and you will find yourself lost for wardrobe transitions, especially when day turns into night.

Versatility is key and again, accessories your best friend. For work or play, the perfect fitting pair of jeans or tailored trousers (go high waisted, fitted and tapered at the ankle for maximum versatility) will stand you in great stead – wear with feminine flats and a silk blouse as you travel, and once at your destination a pair of high heeled ankle boots and a fab fake fur will transport you to any dinner date looking sophisticated yet effortless.

Choose a basic colour palette and pack separates that will mix and match easily such as neutrals, greys and navy, and in addition, have a few colourful statement pieces such as an acid bright jacket and bold coloured shift dress that you can simply throw on and wow in one easy move. Victoria Beckham has some super day to night dresses. Bold florals and colour blocking will also pep up simple staples and chunky jewels and over sized earrings will amp up the glam levels after dark. Carry a classic camel or tan tote by day and swap for a sleek shoulder bag or box clutch for the evening.
