How many times have you heard "never wear black with navy" or "red heads shouldn't wear red"? Well this season, when it comes to colour, it is time to break some style rules. Red is for everyone and navy, well not only does it work happily next to black, for autumn it is the new black. And don't assume primary colours are just for school and pastels reserved for babygros... Pillar box red and crayon blue is a match made in heaven and powder pink and baby blue, two of this season's most grown up shades.
But with everything from electric hued over coats and neon fur, to racy red leather and subtle grey layers - where do you begin when it comes to colour coding your wardrobe? For autumn, navy and grey are my staple shades and my starting point from which to layer over and pep up with other autumnal shades.
Both navy and grey are effortlessly elegant and utterly versatile. You only need look at Lanvin's head to toe grey effect and Stella McCartney's chic navy suit to see why. While black remains a great base colour, navy will give your look an instant A/W14 feel. It is also more forgiving than black, less harsh and both classic and contemporary in one.
For a softer approach, go grey. Choose subtly contrasting fabrics and shades for a gorgeous luxe layering effect and enjoy head to toe grey with or without additional colour pops. Combining grey with autumn's pretty pastels or subtle shades of brown, camel and navy will give a delicate and feminine feel or for a more striking finish, add splashes of neon brights. A hot hued fake fur stole will take an all grey attire to bold new heights.
Red is without a doubt one of those statement making shades that is equally as empowering as it is eye catching. Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Prada, Dior and Valentino all jumped onto the big red bus this season, with everything from red riding hood inspired cape coats at Dior to gorgeous day dresses at Prada and Dolce & Gabbana and fairytale evening gowns at Valentino. Choose a statement red coat, a silky red blouse or structured shift dress (luxe fabrics and good tailoring are essential) or for a subtle injection of colour, add a bright red handbag or ankle boots into the mix.
As well as fierce red, go for eccentric neons, cobalt blue and of course the quintessential autumn shades of burgundy, mustard and bottle green. Simply mix and match and clash and unite your palette through print, pattern and colour blocking.
When it comes to colour, throw out the old rulebook and mix things up a bit...
1. Combine the brights through playful patterns and print.
2. Clash the classics for a twist on the timeless.
3. Choose one colour and get layering.
4. Red can be worn with black, camel and electric pink and from head to toe.
5. Team green with blue, navy with camel and burgundy with pink.
