Though the company was founded by Riccardo Bertoni in 1949, up until recently they were making leatherware exclusively for other brands, in particular Prada, Fendi and Ralph Lauren. But the family decided to venture out on their own, and so this year they are showing their first collection under the name Bertoni.
At the presentation in Milan, one of the first exhibits was a portable desk made for the Milan Furniture Show, the Nomad Trunk with a seat, a writing surface and a range of compartments. Other pieces included trunks reminiscent of long journeys on transatlantic liners. Bertoni is based in Varese, near Milan, and all operations are performed in house at their factory, where there is a carpenter who works on trunk production.
The spring/summer 2015 collection is named the Heritage Collection, featuring natural white leather outside, with midnight blue interiors and dark brown alligator detailing. The brand’s signature colours are dark brown, blue and orange, while new colours comprise taupe and jade.
The pieces are in two major series, Structured, in alligator and French calf, with exaggerated edging; and Foldable, bags in solft calfskin that can be folded to become very compact.
