Stepping in, you feel that you have been catapulted into another age. The time could be the 1930s or 50s, the place resembles Milan. The atmosphere evokes a studio belonging to a Sicilian traveller, whose nostalgic recollections of his homeland take the form of cactus plants, maps of the island, Sicilian vases, large travelling trunks, and antique globes. The furnishings include some 1950s classics, by Gio Ponti and Franco Albini, along with black walnut boiserie, a carefully-restored parquet floor and a marble staircase.
The boutique is part of the historic building that already hosts Dolce & Gabbana's first menswear shop and the Martini Bar. This new space is entirely dedicated to men's footwear, and it presents the complete collection, including the exquisite made-to-measure crocodile shoes. Personalized service is an important part of luxury shopping today, and here it is provided by a shoemaker, who is on hand to repair shoes, and provide customers with advice on the most appropriate shoe care products.
The shoes in this season's collection include some models with the same evocative power as the space in Milan. The leitmotif is Sicilian, of course, with decadent shoes in velvet, in glorious dark, intense colours, and other models with embroidered decoration. Even when brand new, they have a patina of history. They embody all the southern Italian culture that inspired the fall/winter 2013-14 collection. No better place to buy them than in this lovely boutique.
The Dolce & Gabbana men's shoes boutique is on Corso Venezia, on the corner with Via della Spiga, Milan; the entrance is on Corso Venezia. Tel. +39 02 795 747
