Prada Spring / Summer 2012 Featured

Top looks from Miuccia Prada's latest collection

The Prada fashion show for spring/summer 2012 played with the theme of women and cars in the fifties. ‘Sweetness’ was Miuccia Prada’s description of the new summer clothing trends. It was a return to the innocence of a time when clothes were more about pretty than about revealing every bit of thigh and cleavage.

Oversized boyfriend letterman jackets (waist and knee length) came out in floral prints with solid coloured sleeves and cuffs. Green, yellow and blue were used for daytime styles and a mix of gold, black and crimson reminiscent of Imperial China glammed up for the evening. Studded satin jackets were Prada’s feminine take on the T-Birds, while perforated lightweight evening coats (ala Jackie O) were the perfect solution to wear over dresses and blouse skirt combos.

Hallmarks of the new collection were knee length pleated skirts in an array of colours from baby blue, cream, crimson, emerald and acqua, as well as graphic car designs that also appeared on dresses, high waisted leather skirts and tops. Next season bandeau tops are to be worn with high waisted skirts, colour combo ‘do’s’ are maroon with baby blue, grey with emerald, teal with violet, yellow with black and baby pink with aqua and a splash of black. The swimsuits are also of worthy mention as they are lovely enough to wear even outside of the pool with jeans and a blazer.

For Prada accessories: shoes are more classic than last season’s snakeskin creations, cut out slingbacks come in black and crimson, soft caramel reptile, open toe sandal heels are paired with sweet leather bowties up and a stand. Fifties style clutches come with rigid wooden frame handles, larger handbags have metal edges and Prada’s preferred rose pink on leather is once again in the mix. Many looks were paired up with sparkly collar hugging necklaces, rose shaped chandelier earrings and pointy retro eyewear is designed with black lenses and punchy frame colours.
