As the world fashion capital, Milan is definitely the place to be during Fashion Week, when the streets are awash with fashionistas from all over the globe, hurrying to claim their place at the next fashion show at which they can preview the latest creations for the upcoming season. From one showroom to the next, catwalk after catwalk, the city is buzzing with new ideas.
Designers from the world's leading marques have brainstormed and planned, and are now ready to dictate the trends for the future. Fashion Week is a special moment for all brands, as it is the moment when months and months of work is assessed and judged in the space of 20 minutes at the fashion show. In particular, Italian fashion houses always receive careful attention from other brands, and they have vast coteries of loyal fans from all around the world. In September 2010 we were amazed by what we saw on the runways. The fashion that we'll see on the streets this spring.
First and foremost, Brioni, whose creative coordinator for womenswear Alessandro dell’Acqua has recently been the talk of town, brings us a surprising collection of absolute harmony. Brioni’s spring-summer collection was created for a sophisticated, minimalist and very feminine woman. Alessandro’s selection of colors includes neutral earth tones in which khaki, beige and white predominate, contrasting sharply with the coral red that also features strongly in the collection. Great attention has been dedicated to detail, even though all the stitching seems delicate and effortless. This collection seems to have extended daytime, allowing the wearer to be appropriately dressed for whatever occasion.
Anchors aweigh! Salvatore Ferragamo presents a new collection, reminiscent of bygone lazy summer days spent sailing, including short shorts, and long flowing skirts. In this vision of elegant simplicity, once again there are many neutral shades, but combined with subtle pastels or with a splash of vibrant color. There is a wonderful combination of fabrics to create a sophisticated carefree look for a summer that should last forever.
This year we had the pleasure of seeing Dolce & Gabbana return to Milan’s runways. Their new collection is all about tailoring, featuring beautiful embroidery, macramé, crochet and a selection of fabrics. Dolce and Gabbana’s range for the season is vibrant, energetic and cool. In this case, the predominant color is white, with the occasional animal print. Daytime becomes the new eveningwear, and white is the new color for the night!
Miuccia Prada brings us her vision of Josephine Baker’s Brazilian holidays. A collection that features bold colors with very linear and geometric silhouettes. Stripes are combined with a small number of colors to create what Miuccia calls “Baroque Minimalism.” This collection however, would not be complete without its accessories, bright over-sized sunglasses, colorful platform shoes, vibrant colored fur stoles and striped cotton sombreros.
This spring-summer, Gucci presents a very seductive look. The Gucci woman is elegant, sensual, and feminine. The collection features sexy designs in neutral colors with gold accents and the occasional explosion of bright, bold colors. And of course, the legendary Gucci accessories add a great deal, in a masterful combination of tradition and innovation, with contrasts between satin, metal and crocodile. Feathers add another feminine touch that helps the Gucci woman stand out from the crowd.
And, last but definitely not least, Giorgio Armani has taken us on a journey to a faraway land, and has completely broken conventions. “Blue has become the new black” and only one man could do such a thing. Giorgio Armani has created a new hue for elegant eveningwear. The entire collection is blue, yet it has been masterfully designed in such a way as to introduce a wealth of textures and tones. The collection is a brilliant sequence of sophisticated silhouettes that exude femininity, with slinky slim skirts and delicate touches of embroidery and sequins. A superbly appealing look of natural simplicity, in a style that will last forever.
The fascination of the fashion industry lies in the fact that from one season to the next, top designers constantly unleash their creative resources to create a seemingly unstoppable flow of innovation. Whatever the trends, Luxos will be here to highlight the very best.
