V&A Fashion Exhibitions - London

In spring 2012, the Victoria and Albert Museum celebrated the opening of their Fashion Galleries with Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1959. On display until 6 January, 2013, the exhibit is a historical retrospective of ornate ballgowns, classic evening dresses and high fashion. With more than sixty dresses situated throughout two floors of gallery space, an assortment of styles characteristic of various social contexts, such as private parties, royal balls, and Hollywood premieres, are shown. Over the past sixty years, British fashion has evolved from the classic eveningwear of Victor Stiebel, Zandra Rhodes, Jonathan Saunders and Hussein Chalayan into the contemporary designs of Alexander McQueen, Giles Deacon, Erdem and Jenny Packham. The exhibit serves as a visual representation and chronology of British style. In addition, a selection of royal ballgowns are on display, including garments worn by Elizabeth the Queen Mother, Princess Diana, and other members of the royal family. Make sure to stop by this influential exhibit before it closes in January.

In addition, on 20 October 2012 the museum debuted a fashion exhibit entitled Hollywood Costume, a display of over 100 iconic costumes from notable film characters and Hollywood elite over the past century, 1912–2012. Features include Charlie Chaplin through the Golden Age of Hollywood, the cutting-edge costumes for 'Avatar (2009, Costume Designer Mayes C Rubeo, Deborah L Scott) and 'John Carter of Mars' (2012, Costume Designer Mayes C Rubeo). Divided into three galleries, or “Acts”, the exhibit explores various facets of Hollywood costume. Act 1, Deconstruction, explores the costume design process, from script to conceptualization to screen. Act 2, Dialogue, examines the relationship between costume designer and other members of the film production crew. Act 3, Finale, celebrates the most beloved characters and costumes in Holywood history. Hollywood Costume is on display until 27 January 2013.
