The world’s most beautiful sailing yachts will compete between Porto Cervo and La Maddalena
Milan/Porto Cervo, June 8th, 2010 – For the second consecutive year, Loro Piana’s name will be associated with one of the most prestigious sailing competitions in the Mediterranean. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaboration with Boat International Media, the Superyacht Regatta will take place in Sardinia from June 8th to June 12th. Throughout these four days, the world’s largest sailing yachts, no less than 78 feet long (more than 23 metres) will compete for the “The Silver Jubilee Cup” in the waters of Porto Cervo.
The yachts’ coastal routes - with buoys represented by the islands of La Maddalena’s Archipelago – will be decided on a daily basis by the organising committee according to the wind (climate conditions in Northern Sardinia are usually favourable during this time of the year). Not to mention, the hospitality and technical competence of the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, and the world’s most beautiful sailing boats manned by internationally renowned sailing masters: these are the elements that define the Loro Piana Super Yacht Cup and make it a real and unique event.
Exceptional hulls devised by the draftsmanship of famous designers and built by legendary shipyards like P2, designed by Philippe Briand who represents the sports soul of Perini Navi; Highland Fling XI, Reichel Pugh’s new project which heads the Wally Yachts fleet and also includes the 45.19 meters long Saudade. There will be 7, 100-feet models from Southern Wind - South African shipyard - racing to win the overall award (the absolute winner in corrected time). Also present, sailing yachts from the Nautor’s Group, Fitzroy Yachts, Royal Huisman, CNB and Jongert. Of course, only the best sailors are summoned to steer these very special boats: Peter Holmberg, helmsman of P2 and winner of the 2007 America’s Cup with Alinghi and of a silver Olympic medal; Jochen Schuemann, called “The Maestro”, winner of three gold and one silver Olympic medals and of two editions of the America’s Cup, Jens Christensen, the Danish “champion” commanding Gliss, determined to his mark again in the event’s Roll of Honour after the success achieved in the 2009 edition and Tommaso Chieffi, 18 times World Champion, called in as the resident tactician by Pier Luigi Loro Piana who will steer his My Song (84 feet designed by Reichel Pugh).
