On Wednesday 12 June 2013, Chanel opened its new London flagship boutique at 158-159 New Bond Street. It displays the entire range of Chanel products: ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, costume jewellery, watches, fine jewellery, fragrance and beauty.

The store was designed by New York-based architect Peter Marino, who has once again demonstrated his skill at translating the essence of the brand into interior design. The three-floor space is constructed in colours such as soft gold and bronze, along with gloss and mirror surfaces, glass, marble, lacquer and mirror-glass, in a series of contrasting textures that highlight both polished gleam and more rustic finishes. The interiors include some specially-commissioned artworks, and contemporary and antique furniture. All the items were chosen in order to express the brand identity, and Mademoiselle Chanel's heritage as a patron of the arts.

Entering the boutique, you find yourself in a gallery inspired by the famous apartment at 31 rue Cambon. To the left, there is an area dedicated to watches and a selection of fine jewellery, while accessories are displayed on the right. Handbags are presented on a ribbon wall inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel's collection of Coromandel screens. Also on the ground floor are costume jewellery, small leather goods, sunglasses, scarves, belts, fragrance and beauty.

A marble staircase (and a lift) leads up to the first floor, with ready-to-wear and shoes, amidst an antique fireplace, display shelves by Jasper Morrison, and artworks by Karl Lagerfeld, Richard Deacon, Liza Lou and other artists. All this creates an intimate, townhouse, domestic atmosphere. On the second floor, there is another space dedicated to ready-to-wear. From here, there are intriguing views into the atrium, with a 'pearl-necklace' sculpture by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel.

At the opening event on 11 June, hosts Maureen Chiquet, CEO of Chanel, Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Chanel's Fashion division, and Peter Marino, welcomed many guests, amongst whom Stella Tennant, Amanda Harlech, Tallulah Harlech, Thandie Newton, Amber Anderson, Poppy Delevingne, Edie Campbell, Jacquetta Wheeler, Yasmin Le Bon, Elodie Yung, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Caroline Sieber, Laura Bailey, Julia Jarr Samois, Mary Charteris, Phoebe Collins James, Valentine Fillol Cordier, Zebra Katz, Mak Gilchrist, Agathe Chapman, Clara Paget, Bip Ling, Laura Hayden and Jasmine Guinness.
