Langham Place hotel will hold what is sure to be one of Hong Kong’s most anticipated Earth Hour parties - complete with solar-lit break dancers, more than 5000 enviro-candles, ice luges with organic shooters and a 100% sustainable Champagne and canapé menu.
The catch - more than 100 Langham Place staff will give up their Saturday night to play host.
The deal came about following multiple requests from staff to get behind 2010’s Earth Hour; an annual hour of awareness where millions of people around the world turn off their lights to raise awareness of global warming. The hour takes place from 8.30pm – 9.30pm on Saturday 27 March 2010.
Staff agreed to donate their time to the cause and in exchange Langham Place agreed to provide a free 100% organic cocktail party with organic Champagne, wine and canapés in the hotel’s new outdoor lounge, The Backyard.
The hotel will shut down an estimated 7,000 lights which will be replaced by 5,000 environmentally friendly, chemical-free soy candles.
“We will be turning off all external signage and lights in the forecourt, lobby, restaurants, bars and Chuan Spa. It’ll be quite a sight,” confirmed general manager Shaun Campbell.
“We’re definitely still open for business and will be more alive than ever,” said Shaun. “I really am so proud of our staff. It’s a true joy to know that more than 100 of our team are giving up their Saturday night to come back into work and host this party for such a significant cause.”
Since opening in 2005, Langham Place has been committed to environmental protection. The hotel is one of Hong Kong’s only ISO14001 environmentally certified and Green Globe benchmarked properties and has a variety of initiatives in place to engage both guests and staff in environmental awareness.
