Best Wine Bars in Madrid Featured

Spanish wine needs little introduction; the third largest producer of wine in the world, Spain’s reputation follows only that of France and Italy. And of course as everyone knows, wine-producing countries tend to keep the best stuff for themselves so we’ve put together a list of four of our favourite wine bars where you can sample the best of Spain’s wine.

Bodegas Rosell

On the go since 1920, you don’t see many places like this in Madrid any more. Service is old school and attentive and the wine list is a delight with a wide range of wines by region and food that complements perfectly. Just behind Atocha Station, the main train station in Madrid, it’s a little bit off the beaten track so bring a couple of phrases of Spanish with you as they don’t speak English.

Situated in La Chueca neighbourhood this is one of our favourite wine bars in Madrid. Owner and former date show host, the genial Vicente is the perfect connoisseur sharing his enthusiasm for wine with his vast knowledge. The wine list is impeccable, you’ll find unusual choices in red and white along with side dishes of cured meats, cheeses and fish – all chosen to accentuate the characteristics of each glass. Perfect for pre-dinner drinks and nibbles.

Casa Gonzalez

Gonzalez is a Huertes neighbourhood favorite and with good reason. Owner Paco Gonzales is the grandson of the founder so this business has been in the family for nearly a century and they have plenty of stories to tell! Ask any wine aficionado in Madrid to name their favorite wine bar and chances are Gonzalez will be mentioned. You’ll find over 40 wines by the glass and Paco is only too happy to let you taste before you commit. Their range of Spanish cheese is truly impressive and you’ll also find cured meats and other delicatessen items. It’s a small place that can fill up fast so go early, grab a table and enjoy a couple of hours in wine heaven.

Dónde Sanchez

Located in the traditional and excellent Mercado Antón Martín, this is a no nonsense bar serving cold cuts, sausages, cheese, paté and preserves along with a great selection of wines by the glass. Popular with locals, there’s always a great buzz around this bar and service is really friendly. You can also have your purchases to go so it’s a perfect place to put a picnic together! And if you want to mix the grape and the grain, you’ll find a good range of craft beers too.
