Praça do Comércio

The symbol of the Portuguese perseverance and nirvana from the Great Earthquake.

Most of Lisbon was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, a catastrophe that was followed by a subsequent tsunami and rampant fire that raged for five days. From the ashes came the construction of Praça do Comércio, built on the ruins of the Ribeira Palace. Looking out to the Tagus River, the symmetric Praça do Comércio expresses Portuguese people’s perseverance and impenetrable hope after the catastrophe.
