Santuário de Cristo Rei

The twin statue of Christ the King in the heart of Lisbon

You must have seen somewhere the giant statue of Jesus Christ blended in the skyline of Rio de Janeiro. If you don’t have plans to go to Brazil just yet, Portugal offers the closest possible experience to Mount Corcovado. The Sanctuary of Christ the King, inspired by the Rio de Janeiro prototype, was erected in 1959 to express gratitude for Portugal’s neutrality in the Second World War. The monument is easily accessible by ferry and bus.
