The Year of the Pig - What to Expect Featured

Break out the red lanterns!

by Lavinia Pisani

February 5th marks the official start of the Chinese New Year, and out of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals used to represent each lunar calendar, the one for 2019 is the Yin Earth Pig. With their chubby face and big ears, pigs symbolize fortune and wealth in Chinese culture.

Those who were born (after Feb. 4th) in 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 are about to enter their zodiac year. It sounds ironic but instead of entering your lucky year, you will actually have to pay special attention and protect yourself from evil spirits and bad fortune - sorry!

Here’s what to do:

Wear something red everyday

In Chinese culture, red stands for prosperity and courage. People entering their zodiac year have to wear a red-coloured item everyday until January 25th 2020 to better protect themselves.

Think underwear, socks, scarf, sweater, accessories, red jades, even little amulets wrapped in red paper. No matter what you choose, make sure this was given to you by family or friends (if you buy it, it won’t work!).

Other lucky symbols

Beside “living coral” being nominated colour of the year, lucky colours will be yellow, grey and brown during the Yin Earth Pig. Lucky numbers are 2, 5, 8 and lucky directions are northeast and southeast.

Now you know how to protect yourself (or at least try to) from bad fortune. So let’s dig into an overview for all 12 zodiac animals (as sourced by ChineseNewYear and ChineseFortuneCalendar websites).
