Renowned for it's neon cityscapes and a lack of open space, Hong Kong is in fact home to some world-class golf courses, with the game increasingly growing in popularity.
There are many private courses, which have waiting lists for memberships that can run into seven-figure dollar amounts. However, a couple of public courses mean that it is very possible to get a round of golf in, whether you’re time poor in the city or have time to travel out to the New Territories.
Kau Sai Chau The Jockey Club Public Golf Course has three 18-hole links courses with spectacular coastal views of the South China Sea. The Gary Player-designed North (walking) and South (cart) courses are par-72, 6692 yards and par-69, 5838 yards respectively. The demanding North’s signature 14th hole is a par-3 down onto an island green, while the South’s back nine are more demanding than the front. The East course, which was designed by Nelson and Haworth, is a par-72, 6630 yards. Look out for wildlife as you tee off from the immaculate greens, with eagles and egrets soaring above you, and deer to the side of the fairways. The club facilities also include a 60-bay floodlit driving range, putting green and clubhouse.

Out near the airport, the SkyCity Nine Eagles Golf Course is a nine-hole course with seven par-3 and two par-4 holes. The easily accessible course has extensive bunkering, attractive water features and some challenging greens. Signature holes include the 7th, which was inspired by the 17th hole of Sawgrass Florida’s Tournament Players Club, where the island green is completely surrounded by water, and the 3rd, which takes after the 13th hole at South Carolina’s Harbour Town Golf Course, and has more bunkering than green. Ideal for city playing the course is flood lit for night golf with a final tee time of 9 p.m.
