Immersed in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, just a few miles outside Florence, stands the fascinating 16th century Medici dwelling that is Villa La Massa. Set on the banks of the Arno River the villa is surrounded by over 20 acres of lush gardens full of lemon trees and olive groves. The hotel offers a private shuttle service daily to Ponte Vecchio allowing the guests to enjoy the serenity of the villa and unwind after a long day of touring or shopping in Florence.
The 37 guest rooms are divided between three ochre and pink coloured villas that overlook the rolling Tuscan hills. Rooms and suites are traditional, outfitted in a Medici-era style to match the villa’s age. The villa offers the classic Italian five-star experience, with marble baths, antique furnishings, plush fabrics. Nods to modernity are minimal: satellite TV, wireless internet and air conditioning are pretty much the whole list.
The Il Verrocchio Restaurant has an indoor dining-hall with vaulted ceiling and a unique terrace overlooking the Arno River with a view onto the famous Rufina hills. Under the direction of Executive Chef Andrea Quagliarella, menus include both Tuscan regional and Mediterranean specialities. The sommeliers have chosen 400 labels representing some of the best Tuscan wines available. Utmost care is given to procuring prime ingredients, with a preference for local and organic produce. The Medicean Bar offers a wide selection of grappe (Italian eau-de-vie), whiskies, brandies and cocktails to savour after dinner taking in the peaceful countryside evening.
There’s a nearby tennis club and equestrian centre and even golf courses for those of an athletic bent, as well as a fitness centre and outdoor pool. The new Arno Spa features two treatment suites, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a Roman pool.
