Going organic in Dubai

Dubai's reputation as a diverse metropolis where the world's populations mingle is ever increasing. Now the city is catering for the vegan, organic and health-conscious in every field, from spas, to markets and cafés.

For the clean living among us, sticking to a particular diet when abroad can be a challenge. But living an organic lifestyle while you're visiting Dubai doesn't have to be. You can find organic food, products and treatments in a variety of forms; you just need to know where to look. All of our recommendations below have been tried and tested.

Organic Skin Care & Treatments

Due to Dubai's hot and humid climate, it's common to experience adverse skin reactions. To achieve the ultimate holiday glow, brighten and smooth dull skin with a facial at The Organic Pharmacy. This popular London brand recently opened a salon and retail store in Dubai on Al Wasl road. Their retail section includes makeup from their Organic Glam range; detox supplements, baby care, men's treatments, sun care and fragrance.

Their skilled therapists are passionate about health & wellbeing and it shows. I tried their 60-minute Vitamin C & Papaya Enzyme Peel facial. This heavenly treatment packs a lot into one hour and even includes a relaxing head and hand massage. The peel removes the top layer of your skin leaving your skin feeling tighter and fresh looking. All treatments begin with a skin assessment to ensure a suitable treatment is recommended. Their skincare range incorporates homeopathy, herbal medicine and organic ingredients — truly intelligent skincare.

Their spa menu includes massages, waxing and mani/pedis. Before you leave, be sure to pick up their SPF50 Cellular Protection Sun Cream to protect your skin from Dubai's harmful rays.

Organic Restaurants

I instantly fell in love with Comptoir 102, as it's truly one of Dubai's hidden gems. Set inside a villa on Jumeirah road, this cosy restaurant and store has a certain allure —you'll feel like you're visiting a good friend's home. The owners are French and have great taste, attention to detail and are passionate about wholesome food.

The menu changes daily according to the availability of local ingredients and although menu offering is small, each dish is creative and innovative and will satisfy any health-food enthusiast. Arrive early on the weekends, as it's always busy. If you do need to wait, browse their shop for unique accessories and art. Comptor102 has an organic market every Saturday from 11am-1pm.

77 Veggie Boutique is one of Dubai's most popular vegetarian restaurants serving creative dishes made from organic and healthy ingredients. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, this simple café is busiest during lunch as it caters to the office crowd who work in JLT. If you're already nearby, it's worth stopping in. Try the Arabian fit with spinach and chickpeas.

Organic Grocery Store

The Organic Foods & Café was one of the first organic grocery stores to open in Dubai. The owner is from Germany and you'll find their selection of non-perishable items is mostly organic German brands. They have an extensive selection of vitamins and supplements with brands like BioCare, Puritan's Pride and Herbal Authority. There are now two locations and each has a café that serves healthy dishes made from organic food. You can shop online and have your items delivered. If you do eat meat, make sure to pick up their South African Biltong.

The Ripe Market is an outdoor food and crafts market that takes place every Friday at Zabeel Park near downtown Dubai. The market has a great selection of stalls selling healthy food, cold pressed juices, hand-made crafts, jewellery, art and clothing. The Ripe stand is located at the entrance of the market and you can find organically grown, local fruit and veg and great food made with well-sourced and quality ingredients.
