St. George’s Abbey

Once an important monastery, now St. George's Abby is a late-Gothic museum and architectural masterpiece.

by Michelle Bailat-Jones

Founded in the 11th century, this former Benedictine Abbey is now a museum where you can experience remarkably well-reserved architecture and decorative detail from the Gothic and Renaissance periods and from the 19th century. Of particular interest are the late-Gothic cloister and the Festal Hall covered in elaborate frescoes from the early 1500s.
