Thun Castle

Built by the Zähringen dukes in the 12th century, Thun castle towers over the Aare River and Lake Thun.

by Michelle Bailat-Jones

From its four towers enjoy a breathtaking panorama taking in the city, the sapphire waters of the lake, and the wonder of the Bernese Alps. The Knight’s Hall is a rare surviving hall of its type, one of the largest medieval halls in Switzerland. Now a museum showcasing the 4,000 years of history in the region, the castle is home to rare artifacts including a tapestry captured from the Duke of Burgundy in 1476, knights’ armour and weapons from the Middle Ages, Roman coins, and antique toys.
