Nestled in the heart of the Old Town, and housed in a former Guild Hall, the Hotel des Balances enjoys a picturesque location on the Reuss river in the heart of Lucerne.
The hotel’s unusual painted façade is one of the most photographed attractions in town, and viewed from the river Reuss, gives it the impression of a Venetian palace with its intricate paintings of angels, columns, warriors, costumed peasants, and flowers. The history of the building dates back to the twelfth century and proves it to have been a popular meeting place throughout the ages, even if it did not become a hotel until 1837.
Historic flair blends harmoniously with modern design on the inside. 56 tastefully appointed rooms decorated in pastel hues in various categories, are comfortably equipped with a bath, shower (or both), a minibar, TV, radio and direct-dial telephone as well as coffee and tea appliances. The suites all have whirlpools and some have saunas. Most rooms offers views of the Chapel Bridge, the Jesuit Church and the Weinmarkt square, but the choice rooms, of course, are those with a balcony overlooking the river.
The Restaurant La Balance serves excellent French and Swiss cuisine and features a river-side terrace. There is also a casual bistro and a piano bar at the Hotel des Balances.
