Art Lover's Guide to Zurich

Three unbeatable options for art lovers in Zurich.

Kunsthaus

Kunsthaus 3 Monet und RodinKunsthaus museum

From Old Masters and Italian Baroque through to Modern Art and two sublime Monet water-lily paintings, the Kunsthaus is a first-rate collection of fine art. Pride of place goes to the Alberto Giacometti collection with 150 sculptures, many in his trademark thin-man style. Of course there are many other Swiss artists on display, such as Hodler and Klee, as well as works from the Dada movement, which started in Zurich in 1916. This is one art gallery you do not want to miss. It’s a real treat! Closed Monday.

Museum für Gestaltung

Museum fÅr Gestaltung 4 Christine Benz PhotographieMuseum für Gestaltung

What a great place to spend a few hours! Switzerland’s best collection of design and graphics is now all wonderfully displayed in the new Schaudepot at Museum für Gestaltung. Centre stage is the Swiss design collection, including the likes of chairs and Toblerone packaging. Another highlight is the international poster collection, with over 350,000 posters covering politics and commerce and everything in between. Closed Monday.

Museum Rietberg

3 c Museum RietbergMuseum Rietberg

This a rather special gallery, not least because it’s housed in a grand villa that once hosted Richard Wagner and Kaiser Wilhelm II. For over 60 years now it has been home to the Museum Rietberg, with its wonderful collections of non-European art and artefacts. Highlights include Native American masks, Chinese watercolours, Tibetan buddhas and African sculptures. Closed Monday.
