What's on in St. Moritz this February/March

The snow has finally begun in earnest in the Alps and St Moritz’s busy ski season is in full swing.

With a lofty altitude, clear blue skies and unsullied peaks, St. Moritz is the ultimate winter destination. Throughout the season the resort acts as the perfect host to a wide range of sporting and cultural events, as well as live music and of course, snow sports. Here's our pick of the best for February and March 2016.

Cricket on ice

The picture-postcard resort might be famous for the beauty of its ski slopes and the adrenalin rushes of the Cresta Run, but for sheer quirkiness few sporting occasions can beat its February cricket festival on the ice of the frozen lake. This tradition began life in 1988, when a group of visiting British cricketers challenged the students of the international boarding school Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz to a game on the icy lake. A tradition was born and since then it has become an integral part of the cricket calendar, attracting international players and high-flying businessmen from all over the world. 18 -20 February 2016 www.cricket-on-ice.com

The most daring of the town’s events is the White Turf races each February. There’ll be galloping and cantering and skijoring as the competitors are pulled along a 2,700 track on the frozen lake by unsaddled horses at up to 50km/h. The race is a yearly spectacular: the shower of crushed ice slicing the air as the horses gallop past add a jolt of excitement to this unconventional day at the races. 7, 14 & 21 February, www.whiteturf.ch
