Hong Kong, 8 June, 2010 – Academy Award®-winning actress and humanitarian Nicole Kidman visited Hong Kong for the first time on May 20, 2010, to take part in some high-profile activities arranged in cooperation with OMEGA, the storied Swiss watchmaker for which she has been a brand ambassador since 2004.
Nicole kicked off her appearance in Hong Kong with the opening of the new OMEGA Boutique located in Manning House at 38 Queen’s Road Central. The store is the tenth OMEGA Boutique launched in Hong Kong since 2003. At the launch, she officiated the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony alongside Stephen Urquhart, President of OMEGA, Kevin Rollenhagen, President of The Swatch Group (HK) Ltd. and Jimmy Mak, Vice President of OMEGA Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Following the ribbon cutting, Nicole unveiled the OMEGA Constellation Co-Axial Chronometer, Ladies’ 35mm Limited Edition. This special model has been exclusively produced at just 38 pieces for the Hong Kong market to commemorate the opening of the OMEGA Boutique at 38 Queen’s Road Central.
That evening, Nicole was joined by her husband, Grammy®-winning country music sensation Keith Urban at “A Night with the Stars”, a charity gala presented by OMEGA and featuring the celebrity couple to benefit the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) programme, of which Nicole is the Goodwill Ambassador.
“A Night with the Stars” took place at the Grand Ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel with all proceeds from the table sales being donated to UNIFEM. About 200 guests attended the dinner including OMEGA Ambassadors Simon Yam and Qi Qi, celebrities Lam Woon-kwong, William Louey, Cindy Yeung, Alfred Cheung, Heymann Takako, Eric Fok, Kam Kwok-leung, Jimmy and Emily Tang, Bonnie Gokson, Kim Robinson, Selina Chow, Felicia Chow, Stephen Chau, Honda Yumiko, Dr. William Lo and Josephine Lo, Dr. Leong Chi-hung, Kara Hui Ying-hung, Michael and Janet Wong, Barney Cheng, Michael Lai, Eunis Chan, Ana R. and Jessica C.
To express Nicole’s gratitude to the guests supporting UNIFEM, she invited Keith to perform a private concert for the gathered guests. The audience was mesmerized by this unique performance by the country star in an intimate unplugged setting.
Adding even more glamour to the occasion, Nicole wore the first numbered model, (01/38) from the limited edition Constellation Co-Axial Chronometer Ladies’ timepieces at the gala. At the end of the night, the timepiece was generously donated by OMEGA for charity auction. Nicole also signed the watch certificate for all of the 38 pieces in this exclusive collection. The certificates are included with the specially made presentation box that houses every Constellation Co-Axial Chronometer Ladies 35mm watch.
Stephen Urquhart, President of OMEGA said, “Nicole and Keith are two of the world’s great entertainers but more than that, they are true humanitarians. We are proud to count them among our friends and are delighted that we can make a meaningful contribution to an organisation as worthy as UNIFEM.”
Nicole said: "Keith and I are thrilled to visit Hong Kong for the first time as a couple and would like to thank OMEGA and the city for graciously hosting us. It was an incredible experience and more importantly, helped to raise funds for an incredible cause. UNIFEM is working to eliminate discrimination against women and promote gender equality worldwide. It's so important to put a spotlight on these issues and we are pleased to have had this opportunity to help spread their message." And lighting up the room with her famous smile, she announces loudly to rapturous applause, “I love Hong Kong”.
The climax of the evening was when the first numbered model of the 38 pieces in the Constellation Co-Axial Chronometer Ladies’ 35mm Limited Edition collection was put up for auction straight from the wrist of Nicole Kidman. The winning bid was an astounding HK$540,000 from Jimmy Tang, Executive Director of Prince Jewellery and Watch Company. Rounding off a perfect evening, Nicole and Stephen Urquhart made a special cheque presentation of the evening’s proceeds amounted to HK$1,320,000 to Ms Joan Libby-Hawk, representative of UNIFEM.
UNIFEM is the women's fund at the United Nations, dedicated to advancing women’s rights and achieving gender equality. It provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies that foster women's empowerment. UNIFEM works on the premise that it is the fundamental right of every woman to live a life free from discrimination and violence, and that gender equality is essential to achieving development and to building just societies.
