From the pocket watch to the Chatelaine, the earliest wristwatches and most iconic faces, Cartier has pioneered horological evolution throughout time. The veteran haute joaillerie maison’s seminal Santos, Tonneau, Baignoire, Tank and Roadster models stand as forefathers in the canon of fine timepieces. And they were all present at ‘Cartier, A History of Watchmaking’, the agenda-setting retrospective staged at this year’s SIHH. The exhibition – formed of prized possessions drawn from the vaults of Maharajas, European nobility, American scions and Hollywood royalty – awed and entranced with Gravity and Mystery Clocks alongside pioneering chronographs and tourbillions that are as impressive today as they were at inception.
They weren’t the only surprises for those at the definitive watch exhibition in Geneva. For also unveiled was a new collection embodying the house’s signature style of sinuous curves seductively lined with diamonds. Much like its predecessors, the Delices de Cartier collection embodies the haute joaillerie maison’s unmistakable hallmarks of spellbindingly set diamonds, brilliant cut gems and carefree curves that smile at time.
The coquettishly extravagant designs, where white gold breeds a classic appeal and rose gold lends a contemporary edge, range from floating-on-air delicacy to XL models lavished with diamond set 18 karat white gold dials, bezels and buckles that seem guaranteed to enter the echelons of Cartier’s future classics.
Ultra-wearable and highly collectible, subtle but showstopping, whimsical but serious: Delices de Cartier is the most delectable of timepieces. The intrinsically seductive collection, created in homage to Cartier’s greatest watchmaking heroines, stepped forward at SIHH alongside the launch of ‘Mille et Une Heures’, comprised of thirty secret watches that are an evocation of the jewel-laden splendor of ancient India. Each piece only serves to reinforce the fact that every Cartier timepiece is a treasure that defies the sands of time.
