Luxos interviews the luxury watches brand, Audemars Piguet Chief Artistic Officer, Octavio Garcia

by 25 January 2011

As part of our top 10 watches in the world coverage, here is our interview with Octavio Garcia, the Chief Artistic Officer of Audemars Piguet

How do you perceive some of Audemars Piguet's signature collections?
We have something for everyone, and it's really about finding the right timepiece for your personality. The Royal Oak Offshore collection is quite rugged with a high performance attitude, while the Jules Audemars has classic proportions and makes a sophisticated statement. I see the Millenary as a bridge between these two collections. The new Millenary 4101 will be an important piece for collectors. We have so many collections, where each one creates a dialogue with our diverse audiences.

What is your role at Audemars Piguet?
It is always about team work at Audemars Piguet, and there is a lot of synergy as I work closely with the whole team. I listen to the needs of different markets, and get feedback from our partners and customers. I also collaborate with product marketing and management departments. And of course I am also involved in calibre developments.

In recent years, we are seeing a lot of new design elements in the watches such as bolder colours and three-dimensional dial designs.
Yes, we are heading towards a slightly new direction, pushing the envelope in terms of the design, while maintaining a high level of sophistication.

Where do you get inspirations?
The world of automobiles, fashion and many other things inspire me. But I find the Audemars Piguet museum particularly fascinating, because it showcases the brand's past and present. It's where I turn to – not only to see the historical context of the timepieces, but also to create relevance in our new designs. The more expectations customers have, the more enthusiasm we have to push the boundaries of high watchmaking.

What will be your focus in 2011?
Stay true to Audemars Piguet's identity, and continue to achieve genuine watchmaking that is authentic and full of content. We make unique, relevant movements by creating new complications. In the near future, we will also put more focus on developing women's watches.
