Where to celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe

Away from the States this Thanksgiving? Don't miss the turkey with our pick of the best celebrations in Europe

by 14 November 2015

As an American living abroad, few times of year make me quite as homesick as Thanksgiving. Every year, barring travel circumstances usually related to snow, my whole family joins together to eat until we physically can go no further. Living in Europe, can mean going without celebrating Thanksgiving, but thankfully these restaurants across the continent help give expats and travelers a taste of home. So go ahead and get excited for that slice of pumpkin pie, after all, it's only one day a year.

Christopher’s (London, United Kingdom)

As London’s original American restaurant, Christopher’s is really a must for Thanksgiving. Not one to skimp on quality, the meal is a full three courses. Begin with blackened shrimps or goat cheese soufflé (to name just a few); follow by turkey, lamb, steak, roasted vegetables, or salmon; finish with pumpkin pie, peanut butter and chocolate cake, or the classic American brownie. Christopher’s is vegetarian friendly, so if you or your friends want to skip the turkey, this is the place. Not feeling hungry? The bar attached will also serve up three Thanksgiving themed cocktails. £55. www.christophersgrill.com

Tender roasted turkey with pear and chestnut stuffing is paired with sweet potato puree, glazed pearl onions, cranberry sauce, and gravy. Finish your meal with standard American desserts like cheesecake and apple pie. It’s a little taste of America in a city with heavy Renaissance vibes. €45. www.osteriadigiovanni.com

Saint-MartinSaint Martin

Le Saint Martin may be less glamorous than other Parisian Thanksgiving eateries, but it has one of the most authentically American meals you can get in the city. Instead of a French interpretation of the classic dishes, the restaurant serves the dishes in the traditional American way, just like mom used to make. Enjoy carrot soup, roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing, and most importantly, an array of your favourite pies. Le Saint Martin has a special way of transporting you back to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner table—no frills, just genuinely great food for the festivities. €42. bistrotsaint-martin.com

With a 360- degree view of the entire city of Florence, there’s a high chance you could see the Duomo over your Thanksgiving turkey. The meal includes a starter of amuse bouche with tomato croquette and ginger broccoli and finishes with mud cake on a bed of cinnamon and rum gelato.
