by 10 May 2011

Hong Kong is at the top of the leader board when it comes to creating the most innovative developments in shopping experiences. Many of the most sought-after names in retail have set up shop in the world's most vertical city. Today, it is home to many impressive flagship boutiques. We explored the best the city has to offer in exceptional shopping experiences so you can make the most of your time here.

Cartier

French jewellery and timepiece maison Cartier prides itself on being one of the first luxury brands to open a flagship in Hong Kong's legendary Prince's Building in the 1970s. Over time, the boutique has evolved and expanded into what it is today. Make a point to stroll by and marvel at the glass cube exterior, which lights up with a champagne-coloured rain effect throughout the day. Inside, no detail has been overlooked in this sprawling three-level space.

Elegant chandeliers reflect off mirrored walls as you wander through at your own pace. What we like about Cartier's Hong Kong flagship is that it isn't just about the product, but the destination. Coming here feels like you're going through a French art salon where you have the freedom to browse through Cartier's extensive collection of fine jewellery, watches, engagement rings and accessories. Make your special order in one of their private rooms, where the knowledgeable staff will tend to your requests.

Helis & Tang Fine European Antiques

For an exclusive collector's piece or special gift for a fellow antique lover, you'll want to browse newly-opened Helis & Tang, the city's only fine European antiques shop run by partners Peter Helis and Simon Tang. Conveniently located in the Soho district, Helis & Tang's 'classic lifestyle' concept takes a different approach to displaying its range of elegant antiques sourced from around the world.

Pieces are displayed to help you visualize how they will look in your own home. Helis & Tang put an emphasis on quality, appeal and uniqueness when selecting pieces like period lamps, hand-coloured prints and fine china from the Neoclassical to Art Nouveau periods. They also carry branded antiques such as Meissen porcelain, Baccarat crystal and Tiffany sterling silver.

Longchamp

The latest favourite among the locals is Longchamp's flagship 'La Maison 8' which opened earlier this year in the Central district. The 'La Maison 8' concept is unique to Hong Kong and New York. The boutique features artwork by contemporary Chinese artists and international designers.

A wall designed in a curved fan style showcases the label's trademark Le Pliage bags, the popular arm candy accessory for trendsetters the world over. Try on the new women’s ready-to-wear collection in one of the only Longchamp boutiques where it is offered and pick up a new luggage for your next trip in the VIP salon which boasts a range of specialty leather goods.

Shanghai Tang

For culturally cutting edge, we pick the new Shanghai Tang flagship boutique inside 1881 Heritage. We love this space for its ideal location, retro feel in a renovated turn-of-the-century fire station and a rooftop terrace that overlooks the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. The design is nostalgic and welcoming, blending brick and wooden beams with bursts of colourful accents contrasted against old Shanghai style black laquer.

Shanghai Tang's product line is an ode to the fine craftsmanship of Imperial China with an obvious modern take on the classics. Designers have reinvented the art of traditional Shanghainese tailoring into contemporary styles. We recommend you get your own specially made outfit here where you can choose from imperial tailoring for women or made-to-measure garments for men. You'll have a one-on-one couture style consultation to select fabrics and have your measurements taken to create the design.

Gucci

If the Italian luxury experience is what you're after, visit Gucci's landmark flagship in the Central district. The largest Gucci boutique in Asia Pacific, designed by interior architect William Sofield in collaboration with the label’s Creative Director Frida Giannini. This flagship is known as the first to offer a new kind of shopping experience where personal service is at the forefront.

The gleaming glass façade draws us into the intimate yet opulent two-storey boutique. The aisles and staircase are done in Italian travertine limestone, while soft ultra suede-lined shelves are filled with handbags, shoes and accessories. Suspended ceiling hangers display the latest men's and women's ready-to-wear collections. Try on different looks while your shopping companion lounges on a mohair sofa, weighing in on your outfit.
