Cesme - for blue dreams on the Aegean Featured

Cesme's golden beaches and dark blue waters are the backdrop for sizzling nightlife in Izmir
by 14 April 2011

The cool and crystal-clear waters of Cesme with its beaches that go on for miles were long kept secret by the city of Izmir. While the southern beach towns of Bodrum and Antalya saw a boom in tourism over the past decade, Istanbulites began flocking down to this little Aegean town closer to home and off the beaten tourist track. Cesme was once a spa town, its name meaning ‘fountain’ in Turkish. It was famous for its soothing hot springs, preferred by the elderly. Later, Cesme became a hotspot for the younger crowd looking for a vacation spot with good food, luxurious beaches and a vibrant nightlife.

Cesme has something for everyone. Your choice of accommodations can range from a luxury hotel like the Radisson Blu Resort&Spa in Altinyunus Bay to Nars Ilica, a former heritage beachside mansion converted into a charming rustic boutique hotel with eight unique rooms. Radisson Blu Resort&Spa offers a number of king suites and many deluxe suites with plenty of space for luxury travellers in its prime location.

A visit to Cesme’s old town will reveal a 14th century castle built by the Genoese and an array of quaint little restaurants that serve up a menu of fresh seafood. If you are looking for a place to see and be seen, make a reservation at Alacati’s Tuval Restaurant, conveniently located on the village’s bustling main street. Order the 'kumru' sandwich, a local speciality, or stop by Kumrucu Huseyin’s eatery at the harbour for a snack.

If surfing is your passion, then you may have already heard about the waves at Alacati Bay. This surfer’s paradise offers many surfing schools and is a great place to try your hand at kitesurfing. Looking for a more tranquil holiday experience? Head to Aqua Club in Sifne. Bathe luxuriously in Sifne’s hot thermal springs while sipping cold mojitos all day long.

Cesme also has a lot to offer nature lovers. You can explore the area’s many beaches such as Çiftlikköy, Dalyanköy, Reisdere, Küçükliman, PaÅŸalimani, Ayayorgi, Kocakari, Kum, Mavi and Pirlanta, or take a day trip to the beautiful Greek island of Chios right across from Cesme.
