New York plays host to Dîner en Blanc
The second annual all-white Dîner en Blanc New York was held Monday night at New York's Lincoln Center Plaza. The event itself began 24 years ago in Paris when a man named François Pasquier threw a dinner to reconnect with friends, advising them to wear white so that they could all find each other. Over the years, the event grew popular by word of mouth, occupying some pretty impressive Parisian venues from the Louvre to Notre Dame Cathedral. Now Dîner en Blanc has gone viral, after New York, upcoming organized dinners will take place in Philadelphia, Chicago, Singapore, Vancouver and Brisbane.
So how does it all work? Guests sign up to a waiting list (there were 10,000 hopefuls on this year's list, which was cut down to 3,000 attending in all), pay $25 and follow the prescribed dresscode of formal white attire. They also must bring their own white tables and white chairs along with food and drink. The location of the dinner is only revealed an hour before it starts.
Some call it a hassle, others call it an entertaining experience that is well worth the effort. “People are just really finding a love for the event,”Sandy Safi, director of development at Dîner en Blanc International told WWD. “The spontaneity of it, the fact that it’s different, enjoying the outdoor space, dressing up.…I think it’s all of the elements together that make it interesting. Connecting with people all over the world who have a love for the same thing is really what we’re trying to build.”
