A new breed of coffee shop – notably cat cafés - is now sweeping across the globe, reputed to be the hottest place for cat lovers to take their tea.
The first of its kind opened in Japan, back in in 2004, providing customers with a roomful of feline companions while they enjoyed their sashimi. Now Tokyo, alone, boasts more than a hundred of these establishments.
Last year such a café opened in Paris, last month in London’s hip East End and the first US cat café is slated to open at the end of the year in San Francisco.
The London cat café, which is named after the kitten in Alice in Wonderland - Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium - is fully booked until May, according to the café's website. It was reported that members of the public completely crashed the booking site in its opening weeks, not so surprising since London is teeming with cat lovers and cat purring has also been considered beneficial for ones health.
Anna Kogan, co-owner of the establishment, has already set up a charitable foundation for animals, which has branches in over 20 Russian cities.
All 11 cats living inside the two-floor café are rescue animals and the well-being of the animals takes priority over the visitors.
