Jacob Cohën's Creative Director dies in road accident
ST. TROPEZ - I met Nicola Bardelle only twice in passing through the Jacob Cohën showroom here in Milan. Handsome, driven and extremely talented, his creativity had grown his family's denim business Jacob Cohën (named after the less-famous partner of Levi Strauss) into a popular Italian fashion label, which today is known for its stylish handmade jeans. Every season Bardelle came out with literally hundreds of new designs for men and women, transforming the jean fabric into a canvas where any style, print and wear was made possible. His jeans could be mistaken for a formal pair of evening trousers, linen pants or even khakis, this was and is their lasting appeal. The little Italian flag on the backseat of the jeans was a testament to their being made entirely in Italy, something very rare to find in a pair of jeans nowadays, even from the biggest designers.
Bardelle's life was cut short last Friday in a road collision in Saint Tropez where the 45-year-old designer was vacationing, he was riding a vespa at the time of the accident. He had recently inaugurated the very first Jacob Cohën flagship in the Côte d'Azur. Bardelle leaves behind a wife and two children. In addition to Jacob Cohën, Bardelle also founded the American Colonial-style brand Massaua.
