Up until today, luxury smartphones have been very much a men thing: just think Vertu and its wonderful phones with an appearance that suggests Stealth planes and super high-tech.
Now, for women, there is an alternative, by Savelli from Geneva, Switzerland. The maison, founded by Alessandro Savelli, crafts smartphones that combine technology with sumptuous, voluptuous curves, sculpted and polished pink gold, diamonds, prestige leather, and the sort of craftsmanship that can be seen on the highest classes of jewellery and watches. Each phone has a graceful, sensuous S-shaped edge in precious stones and gold. Diamonds are set using the 'serti neige' or snow-setting technique, in which stones of differing size are placed edge to edge, creating glittering organic curves. Other case materials include high-tech, non-scratchable ceramic, exotic leathers that hug the complex curves of the structure, and a remarkable sapphire glass with a 2-axis curvature, creating an ultra-bombé shape that contributes to the phone's exceptionally stylish looks.
Alessandro Savelli himself said, “I wanted to create something totally new, never attempted before. A jewel of tomorrow, only for women. A design which would bring a new perspective on jewellery and in the luxury goods industry, an obsessive search for beautiful materials to work with. From Ultra-BombeÌ crystal sapphire to high-tech ceramic.”
The smartphone, in a range named Jardin Secret, uses Google Android technology; it has 32 GB total memory, micro USB, GSM QuadBand coverage worldwide, WCDMA 3G Triband for downloads at up to 7.2 Mbps, and PC and Mac synchronization.
In short, it's a state-of-the-art smartphone, with one notable difference: it looks good. To quote Alessandro Savelli, “It’s a precious possession and the more you hold it and use it, the more personal it becomes... a special place that belongs to you and only to you... a Jardin Secret. This was the inspiration for our debut collection.”
There are 11 models in the Jardin Secret collection, all with fluid contours that reflect an Italian design spirit. Their ringtones were composed by French DJ and music artist Stephane Pompougnac. They are presented in a campaign featuring Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, with photography by Patrick Demarchelier.
Launched in July 2013 in Paris, at an event hosted by Savelli's contemporary style icon Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Savelli's phones are available at the Harrods Fine Jewellery Room, 87-135 Brompton Road, London SW1X 7XL.
