Mannish over coats
Loose, louche, luxe and lovely, a mannish over coat is a wardrobe staple for every woman. Don an oversized long over coat over any outfit and you will instantly transport your style into a new realm of cool.

White coats
At first glance, you may be put off by the impracticalities of a white coat, but if you can brave its maturity, then a white coat is a truly elegant and sophisticated option this winter. Look for sleek silhouettes and minimal designs.

Double-breasted coats
A staple most seasons, the double-breasted coat never fails to offer a sophisticated and grown up edge to everyday wear, both on and off duty. This season, opt for fabrics such as tweed and checks, and look for contemporary twists on the classic design including flared and oversized silhouettes and unique collars.DOUBLE breasted coats Models: Miu Miu, main image: Miu Miu, green: Tom Ford, black: Proenza Schouler, chequered: Victoira Beckham, navy: Isabel Marant

Minimal coats
Fuss free and style high, winter’s minimal coats are all about sleek and subtle lengthy silhouettes, immaculate tailoring and sublime, beautiful fabrics. Follow the style mantra of ‘the simpler the better’ and wear over luxe layers and separates for a pared down and mature finish.

Belted coats
Wrap yourself up in a belted wool coat this winter for a cosy yet chic finish. A full-length belted number is a versatile winter warmer and look for neat finishing touches such as oversized lapels and chunky buttons to add to the snug aesthetic.

Shearling coats

Coloured coats
The simplest way to brighten up your winter wardrobe is with a ‘dream coat’ of colour. Primary shades such as pillar-box red, royal blue and yellow are classic contenders and pretty pastels remain on this season’s style agenda. But for something with a distinct new season retro feel, combine colours with print, pattern and patchwork.

Chequered coats
This winter is blanketed in checks, tweed and hounds tooth and it is certainly, ‘cool to be square’ this season. Whatever your favourite coat style, you are likely to find it in a chequered print this season. Black, white, red and grey are the key colours, but more earthy and rustic tones join the square gang too.

Black evening coats
When those after dark soirees call for something a little more glamorous than a regular over coat, a long black evening coat or cape will fit the bill. Look for sophisticated sleek silhouettes and evening embellishments, such as glittering brocades, sumptuous satin and leather trims, faux fur and shimmering sequins and crystals.
