Style Guide: New Year’s Eve alternative elegance

Banish the little black dress and cocktail classics and embrace this season's new after dark heroines...

by 22 December 2014

Adhering to dress codes is style etiquette. But just because an invite states, 'Black Tie & Sequins' it doesn't rule out a sleek white tux for her and a glittering bow tie for him, especially when it comes to party central – New Years Eve.

This 31st December, why not do away with age-old traditional party wear and stretch the style boundaries a little. Leave the little black dress, red cocktail number and black sequin jacket for another occasion, and this New Year's Eve, don something alluringly alternative. How about a tailored jumpsuit, navy sequins, a little white dress or a maxi skirt and lace tee?

Navy is this winter's answer to black. And while it may be the preserve of daytime elegance, navy can look equally as glam and sophisticated after dark especially when teamed up with some sparkle and shine. High shine fabrics, satin and silk, as well as feminine lace, and of course the ubiquitous NYE sequins (some traditions I will uphold all in the name of sparkle) will all bring that added va va voom to navy. White is also a good antidote to black, and a little white dress, trouser suit or white embellished skirt and evening tee all ooze contemporary evening glamour. Team with gold or metallic accents for a chic finish.

A skirt and top might not seem like party ready wear, but get the combo right and you will knock any cocktail dress off the top spot in terms of new season style. An embellished skirt – think sequins, jewels and gems, worn with a silk top, white blouse or evening tee and a blazer will not only make a serious style statement for the new year, but can be worn again and again into 2015. A bling skirt is an essential for your new season wardrobe and can be dressed up or down for day or night.

If you want to make the ultimate dramatic style statement before you wave goodbye to 2014, a maxi skirt is the answer. This new season hero piece is the epitome of alternative after-dark elegance and will elevate your style into serious new heights not only on NYE, but also well into SS 15. Go for a sleek black number, a pretty pastel piece or wow in white, and don't be afraid of lace, ruffles, ruching, splits and sheer panels, all of which add that distinct modern elegance.

For a more tailored approach come cocktail hour, a trouser suit or jump suit is the perfect choice. Figure flattering, comfortable and screaming contemporary cool, jumpsuits make perfect party pieces and there is a style for everyone. Go for cinched at the waist and tapered at the leg if you are petite or fuller figured and want to enhance your curves, for the skinny, a sharply tailored tuxedo style will flatter, or if you have long luscious legs a fully sleeved and billowing wide legged variety will certainly wow.

Black may not be at the top of my guest list for NYE, but it certainly works when it comes to jumpsuits. White is also a winner and if you are feeling bold and brave, a subtle animal print makes a contemporary statement. Sequins, lace, mesh and leather trims also take a classic jumpsuit into the realm of midnight madness and a pair of sky high stilettos and a glitzy boxed clutch are essential to top off any star spangled ensemble.
