The Hong Kong flagship located on 1 Duddell Street represents a new era for Shanghai Tang as they say goodbye to their original flagship on Pedder Street. Tapping Shanghai-based firm Design MVW to bring their new vision to life, the flagship is a modern interpretation of an opulent Art Deco Chinese mansion. This design concept mirrors the brand’s own flair for transforming Chinese motifs into modern and internationally appealing wares. The space is swelling with stylized symbolism, from the impressive illuminated façade outside to the grand foyer inside. The custom-made crystal chandelier hanging in the entrance emulates the maze-like ‘Shou’ symbol, a Chinese word which mean longevity. A truly unique shopping destination in the city, here’s our guide to the different realms of Shanghai Tang’s mansion.
The ground floor is dedicated to all things womenswear and accessories. Ascend the elaborate wrought iron Art Deco staircase at the heart of the boutique to feel like the master of the manor. Womenswear continues on the first floor. Don’t leave here until you make a stop at the Fragrance Bar, with black-on-hot-pink Chinese cloud motifs. Take a seat at this intimate dressing table and take a whiff of Shanghai Tang’s heavenly scents. The first floor is also home to the brand’s bespoke Imperial Tailoring Atelier. Peruse their collection of sumptuous European laces and fabric before enlisting their tailors to make your very own made-to-measure suit or dress in one-of-a-kind pieces that blend antique Shanghainese craftsmanship with the latest styles and fine materials.
The second floor embodies the DNA of a discreet gentleman’s club with plush leather couches and armchairs to sink into while deciding on your purchases. Make sure to pop into the polo wear section on this floor, designed in tribute to the ger tents of Mongolia, where the sports game originated. Completing the lifestyle range on the second floor is Shanghai Tang’s home collection.
