LONDON - The new Burberry Prorsum fall / winter 2012-2013 womenswear collection is a toast to an autumn tea party – circa 1890. The hallmarks of the new line are bow tie belts in burnt rose and yellow, owl printed shirts, floral printed dresses and velvet coats.

As if he were taking a cue from Oliver Twist, Christopher Bailey’s first looks came sauntering down the Hyde Park tent runway in gray page boy caps and skirts with giant pouch-like pockets jutting out on either side of the hip – perfect for an afternoon of playing pick pocket. Cargo, military style coats, classic trenches with bold new accents such as striped bottoms and felted ruches as well as bomber jackets in neutral earth tones made up the majority of outwear, whereas a deep violet, quilted velvet number walked as the final number on Burberry-preferred model: the willowy Cara Delevingne.

Principal materials included velvet, wool and leather. We fancied accessories such as the striped carpet bag and gold-studded leather gloves giving the ultra upper crest English lady, a punk edge. The front row was brimming with A-listers from the fashion industry’s number one preferred photographer Mario Testino to actresses Kate Bosworth and Clemence Poesy as well as Blacked Eyed Peas recording artist Will.i.am.
