NEW YORK - The countdown is on to tonight's star-studded Costume Insititue Gala, also known as the 'MET Ball'. Known as the Oscars of the East Coast, the MET Ball marks the opening of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's latest fashion exhibit at the renowned Costume Institute. This year, the gala honours the late designer Alexander McQueen with an exhibition marking his 19-year career, called Savage Beauty.

The theme is a timely tribute, given that last week's Royal Wedding also paid homage to McQueen with Kate Middleton's much talked about wedding dress being designed by his close friend and the brand's current creative director, Sarah Burton. Previous years' themes have highlighted the "Model as Muse", "Superheroes" and the style of the "American Woman."

American Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour helps to organize and invite high society and the fashion elite for the evening. She also handpicks stars to co-chair the event; this year she's chosen Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth, designer Stella McCartney and François-Henri Pinault, the CEO of PPR (parent company of the Alexander McQueen label) and his wife, actress Salma Hayek as honorary chairs. Previous years have included Nicole Kidman, Marc Jacobs, Kate Moss, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Photos from tonight's gala will be posted on the Luxos Fashion blog tomorrow
