Andrea Zittel 'Between Art and Life'

by 15 June 2010

In conjunction with Pitti Uomo fashion week, the Fondazione Pitti Discovery presents Between Art and Life, an exhibit showcasing the works of Andrea Zittel at the Costume Gallery at Pitti Palace in Florence. Curated by Alberto Salvadori, Between Art and Life features the work of one of the most interesting figures on the international contemporary art scene. The 45 year old American has participated, more than once, in the Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel and the Whitney Museum Biennial. She recently held a large solo exhibition at the Schaulager Museum in Basel.

Andrea Zittel signs her works with A-Z Administrative Service Zittel, an original ‘brand name’ that is both impersonal and a manifesto that reveals her approach to conceiving and producing art. She was born in California where she completed the first part of her education before moving to Brooklyn. She is now back in California and lives in the Joshua Tree Desert with her son.

Confidence. Freeedom. Consistency. Experience. Andrea is an artistic researcher, who then applies her findings to daily life, discovering the materials, limits and meanings of living space, clothing and household objects, the body’s resistance in situations where time cannot be measured, and the procedures we use to define and evaluate quality.

Between Art and Life presents a selection of more than 80 of the artist’s works, two of which were created specifically for the occasion. The show ranges from station wagons to living systems, and capsules for extreme situations, such as the desert, to clothing uniforms, gouaches, panel paintings and paper rugs.

"To see Andrea Zittel at the Galleria del Costume in Palazzo Pitti", says Alberto Salvadori, the exhibition curator, "is to discover daily life, the personal dimension of living in a space that has turned the tiniest gestures of a lost intimacy into something fit for a museum".

Between Art and Life will be Andrea Zittel’s first show in a public museum in Italy. The opening at Palazzo Pitti will be the core artistic event of the forthcoming Pitti Uomo fashion week. The exhibit is produced and sponsored by the Osservatorio Arti Contemporanee - Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze (OAC) and the Fondazione Pitti Discovery, with the support of the Polo Museale Fiorentino, and with the cooperation of the Andrea Rosen Gallery of New York and the Galleria Massimo De Carlo of Milan.
