Cars - The GTA Spano, Spanish thoroughbred - 27-07-2011
The GTA Spano, Spanish thoroughbred
"There are two kinds of people in the world, the ones who dream and the ones who make the dreams come true." This piece of inspirational philosophy heads the GTA Motor website, and introduces you to the world of GTA Motor. The company is masterminded by Domingo Ochoa, who dreamt of building a super sports car combining the latest technology with cool design and a truly sporting drive. More than that, he wanted to create automotive history in Spain and in the world, by building the fastest and most powerful car ever made in Spain.
Engineer Sento Pallardó designed the GTA Spano, and Ochoa decided that only 99 would be made, making it an exclusive vehicle. It is a pedigree from its sweeping lines right down to the wolf motif that features on the shield at the front of the bonnet and elsewhere in the interior. The wolf also appears on Ochoa's family crest. A car with blue blood.
Design features begin with the doors, which, in common with many sports cars, have no real frames. They don't have even have handles: you open the door by pressing the GTA logo. The doors are perfectly faired into the air intakes, in a series of complex curves contrasting with crisp edges. The rear of the car is a slick "form follows function" design, with aerodynamics improved by air flowing under the car, and a wing that fits the profile to perfection. In addition, clever air intake design gives the car a really rugged, tough, road-eating image.
The glazing is high tech, with a liquid crystal shading system, and an adjustable interior light system. The sun visors are built into the glass using the same LCD technology. There is no central rear-view mirror, but a rear camera that projects an image onto the LCD screen on the dashboard. In addition, there is a wide-angle camera for easy parking - it cuts in when you engage reverse gear.
The GTA engine is a V10, 8.3 litre rear-mounted power plant developing 820 CV and 960 Nm torque. Performance is slick, with top speed of over 350 km/h (say GTA) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds. These figures mean that it is one of the five fastest street-worthy cars in the world. The gearbox is in two versions, automatically sequential 7-speed with paddle shift on the steering wheel, or manual sequential. The car can be compared to the Bugatti Veyron, the Aston Martin One, and the Maserati GranCabrio.
We haven't tested the car yet, but it looks good. I wonder what the price is?
