5. The Penthouse Suite, The Martinez Hotel, Cannes

The largest, most expensive suite on the Cote d'Azur, and the only terraced penthouse. There are two: each has a whirlpool tub, plasma screen TV, DVD library, kitchen, open bar, and private butler. 4. Royal Suite, Burj Al Arab, Dubai

This two-storey, 8,400-square-foot suite offers views over the Arabian sea, marble flooring, private cinema, elevator linking the rooms on different levels, and a master bedroom that includes a rotating four-poster bed.

The marble bathroom includes Hermès products. Guests are transferred by Rolls Royce, or by helicopter at a small extra charge. There is a personal butler available around the clock. The Royal Suite is luxury throughout, with staircase in marble and gold, leopard-print carpeting, and Versace linen.

Activities include a submarine ride to an underwater restaurant with an aquarium containing sharks.

3. Imperial Suite, Park Hyatt, Vendôme, Paris

This suite is on the 5th floor. It covers 200 square metres, with a 60 square metre balcony overlooking Rue de la Paix and the Vendôme column. The Imperial Suite includes a dining room, kitchenette, bar, mansard roof and high ceilings. The in-suite spa has a whirlpool bath, steam shower, and a massage table. High-speed internet, computer with flat screen monitor, multi-line telephones, and a separate work area.

2. Hugh Hefner Sky Villa, Palms Casino Resort, Las Vegas

Sky Villa was commissioned by Hugh Hefner to mirror the concept of a playboy mansion, with suggestions from a vintage Playboy article about the ideal bachelor pad. The suite cost about $10 million, but you can rent it for $40,000 a night. With a floor area of 9,000 square feet, it includes a glass elevator, a rotating bed beneath a mirror ceiling, a glass wall whirlpool tub from which you get great views of the Strip, butler service, massage and spa rooms, fitness rooms, poker table, fireplace, three bedrooms, and pop-up plasma TVs.

1. Royal Penthouse Suite, President Wilson Hotel, Geneva

The Imperial Suite takes up the entire top floor of the hotel. It is reached by private elevator. It has four bedrooms, six bathrooms with mosaic flooring, a cocktail lounge and a terrace with a dramatic view through bulletproof windows over the city, Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc. Decor is in contemporary style, with marble and hardwood floors. The living room has a billiards table, a cocktail lounge with a view of the Jet d'Eau, and a library. It has space for 40 guests. The dining room seats 26 around an oval mahogany table.

Security at the Imperial Suite is amongst the best in the world, ideal for celebrities or traveling heads of state who visit the United Nations headquarters next door at the Palais Wilson.
