Meet A. Lange & Söhne's Luca Dondi
Insider tips on the brand’s bestsellers and Christmas giftsby Cheryl Chu
As one of the top 10 watches in the world, A. Lange & Sohne developed 40 new calibres over the past 15 years and won 14 international watchmaking awards for timepieces like the Lange Zeitwerk. We met Luca Dondi, A. Lange & Söhne Southern and Eastern Europe General Manager, to learn about the brand's presence in Italy today.
Mr. Dondi said to LUXOS, “There are three cornerstones in the history of A. Lange & Söhne that you must know. In 1845, its factory opened in Saxony with the mission of creating beautiful watches that celebrate the heritage of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In 1994, A. Lange & Söhne relaunched after the fall of the Berlin Wall and celebrated the auspicious occasion by presenting the Saxonia, Lange 1 Tourbillon and the "Pour le Mérite" with a fusée-and-chain transmission.
These timepieces made their mark in the world of high watchmaking with unique, patented mechanism and are all equipped with the three-quarter untreated German Silver plate. 2009 is the year of the Lange Zeitwerk – the second revolutionary watch after our iconic Lange 1 – winning the Grand Prix d'Orologerie "L'Aiguille d'Or” prize in Switzerland. These cornerstones form a solid foundation on which A. Lange & Söhne builds its Italian presence.
"With the new economy, watch lovers and collectors are more careful than ever when they shop for timepieces. Just in Southern Europe alone, we've seen a 55% increase in purchases, not to mention countries like China. The challenge is production. We have to be able to produce more watches without compromising quality and meet demands.
In Italy, the A. Lange & Söhne bestsellers are the Lange 1, Double Split and Zeitwerk. Italian collectors love these three watches because of their patented mechanisms which make them absolutely unique. If you are new to the brand, I would suggested the Saxonia Automatic, then you can get the Lange 1 Daymatic or the Timezone."
He also emphasized, “In Italy, we want to be recognized as a watchmaker that offers innovative, precise functions and quality hand-made finishings in our unique time instruments.”
